2017 had its own fair share of quirky titles that went as Lipstick Under My Burkha, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Shubh Mangal Savdhaan, Newton, Jab Harry Met Sejal, Tumhari Sulu, Behen Hogi Teri, Running Shaadi, Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana and more. Now 2018 is set to no different with many interesting films with unusual titles waiting to arrive.
Mukkabaaz: With Anurag Kashyap at the helm of affairs, one expects a film to be special in any case. With the title itself being Mukkabaaz, this story about a boxer already boasts of an interesting promo. Starring Vineet Kumar Singh as the lead protagonist and Jimmy Sheirgill as the antagonist, Mukkabaaz sees the coming together of Aanand L. Rai and Eros with Anurag Kashyap and the combination is already looking lethal.
Kaalakaandi: Right from the time of title announcement, there was some intrigue that built around Kaalakaandi. Moreover, with Saif Ali Khan leading from the front, one is anyways staring at a quirky entertainer since the actor has the knack of picking such unusual subjects with different themes (remember Go Goa Gone?). The film has Delhi Belly writer Akshat Varma making his debut as a director and its promo has caught attention.
Pari: With a title that goes as Pari, one would have expected a fairy tale offering. However, one look at the solitary still that has been released of the Anushka Sharmastarrer and it looks like anything but a fairy tale setting. One waits to see what does the leading lady have to offer in this film which is produced by Prernaa Arora from KriArj. The film is directed by Prosit Roy and gives an impression of being a dark affair.
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety: One of the quirkiest titles of the year, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweetyalso boasts of a hilarious promo that makes one wait to catch the film this Valentine’s week. Featuring the entire team of Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety has Kartik Aryan, Sunny Singh and Nushrat Bharucha playing the three key roles as mentioned in the title. Director Luv Ranjan is returning with yet another youth centric laugh entertainer.
Hichki: Not many would have imagined making a film on hiccups. However, filmmaker Siddharth P. Malhotra has not just made the film on this subject but also named it as Hichki. The film’s promo is out and one can sense a truly different tale in the offering here. The film comes from the house of Yash Raj Films who are making biggies like Tiger Zinda Hai on one end and then are quietly backing films like Hichki as well.
Happy Bhag Jayegi Returns: As a film title, Tanu Weds Manu Returns didn’t really sound logically correct except for the fact that it came across as a true sequel. Same is the case with Happy Bhag Jayegi Returns as well which does one thing right and that is to announce the fact that Diana Penty is returning for this Mudassar Aziz directed film and this time with Sonakshi Sinha for company. Aanand L. Rai and Eros collaborate once again for this film.
Veere Di Wedding: Though the film is titled Veere Di Wedding, of one what hears it is all about women actually. So is it a bunch of sisters coming together for their veere’s [brother’s] wedding? Well, this pretty much looks like the case for this fun entertainer in the offering that is spearheaded by Kareena Kapoor Khan with Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania. Shashanka Ghosh is set for his next after Khoobsurat.
Harshvardhan Kapoor – Vikramaditya Motwane’s next: The film was earlier titled Bhavesh Joshi but is now hunting for a new title. Rest assured, whenever it is announced, quite a few eyebrows will be raised for sure since one expects nothing less from Vikramditya Motwane who is taking a much more commercial route with this film here. In the role of a vigilante in the film, Harshvardhan Kapoor is playing an altogether different character when compared to his Mirzya.
Sandeep aur Pinky Faraar: From Ishaqzaade to Sandeep aur Pinky Faraar, it has been quite some journey for Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra who are (but obviously) playing Sandeep and Pinky respectively. Somehow, the film’s title gives vibes of being yet another Bunty aur Bablu, more so since this too is a Yash Raj Films’ offering. Director Dibakar Banerjee is set to be taking an altogether different and more commercial route with this one.
Batti Gul Meter Chalu: One of the funniest titles of 2018, Batti Gul Meter Chalu features Shahid Kapoor. This has to be yet another unique title for the actor after Phata Poster Nikhla Hero. The film is said to be a satire that revolves around electricity and is directed by Shree Narayan Singh (of Toilet – Ek Prem Katha fame). Producer Prernaa Arora has been backing quite a few different films and this one is a welcome addition to the list.
